what are your obligations to them? Do you have to split your property evenly with them and your own children if you don't want to?

Laws vary from state to state, but if they are no longer minors, and/or you never adopted them, I would generally say no.

Again, it's just a guess.

PS Most of the time, you can "disinherit" adult children under any circumstance. From what I know, as a non-expert.

In a will -- you can give your property away to whoever you want -- very few countries or states impose any restrictions on who you can give your property to under a will.

However, many countries and many US states do allow children -- whether 'step' or not -- to "take against the will". That means they get a certain share, regardless of what the will says. But that doesn't affect how the will is written -- just what the law requires outside of the will.

You have no obligations to anybody except any dower or curtesy rights a spouse may have. You can give everything to the step children and nothing to your natural children if that's what you want to do. Or vice versa, or be like Leona Helmsley and give something to half her grandchildren and nothing to the other half and a fortune to her dog.

No, you don't need to leave it to anyone specific. To avoid legal challenges on the basis of "he just forgot to mention me" it is generally advised that you leave $1 to each child/step-child. This shows you considered them, and decided to leave nothing of value to that person.

The point of a will is that YOU decide how to distribute your estate. You can give it all away to charity, if you wish.
