Here's a goddess that--well

Demeter the goddess of agriculture and fertility.
Ares god of war.
Artemis goddess of the hunt and protector of children.

In Ancient Greece and some Romans believed that without these gods and goddesses (there are many more) we would have nothing. They also believed that Zeus (king of gods) and his wife Hera (queen of goddesses) gave mortals the power of the Immortal ones (gods and or goddesses.) If you need to know anything else about the gods and goddesses try finding
Greek Gods and Goddesses by:Geraldine McCaughrean.

Good Luck.

The thing about Greeks is that they were so advanced in every way. Til this day, you can see the Greek influences everywhere you turn. The movie "300" were based on true story, though very much hyped up to make the movie sound more exciting. But it is true that Spartan king Leonidas felt they were almost invincible, yet he still relied on oracle for guidance, and supposedly die to fulfill his destiny described by the oracle. This is just one example of how much influence myths had on Greeks in their decision makings.

Each city state had a god or goddess that protected the city, was the "luck" of the city, granted the city victory in war. For example: Argive Hera! Hera was the goddess that protected and sponsored Argos. Athena was the goddess of Athens. Eventually, the Greeks amalgamated all their gods into a pantheon.

The goddesses started the Trojan war. Once upon a time, three goddesses, Athena, Minerva, and Aphrodite were walking in a grassy field. Paris, a son of King Priam of Troy was herding sheep, much like one of the sons of Ben Cartwright of Bonanza. Eris, who was one of the furies, daughters of the god of war Ares with "earth girls," formed a golden apple by magic, inscribed with the words, "For the most beautiful." Eris threw the apple to the ground. The goddesses fell to argue who should have it. They approached Paris. They gave the apple to him and told him to award it.

Athena approached Paris alone and told him that if he awarded the golden apple to her, she would make him the most powerful man in the world.

Minerva approached him next and said that if he awarded the golden apple to her, she would make him the wisest man in the world.

Aphrodite approached him last and said that if he awarded the golden apple to her, she would give him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

"The Judgement of Paris" was to award the golden apple to Aphrodite. Unfortunately, the most beautiful woman in the world was Helen, and she was already married to Menelaeus, king of Sparta.

But people found it increasingly hard to believe in the gods. How could one take moral lessons from Zeus, who used to take animal forms to have sex with "earth girls?" "Earth girls are easy!" Plato and Socrates tried to invent a morality without the gods. They argued that "good" was something that existed. All things that are good on earth partake of that universal good that exists somewhere just outside. So all humans should live good lives, because it can be proved that good is better than evil.

People accused Socrates of insulting the gods. Respect for the gods was needed for survival of Greek cities and Greece. Socrates was ordered to drink hemlock (poison).
