I have a 2007 Honda Accord coupe with 2.4 Liter 4-cyl-engine with 5-speed automatic transmission and multiport fuel injection. Can I buy the 89 (plus) gas from shells or I have to use 87?

You can almost always use go upward on the octane number, just not the other way around.

Octane numbers are simply a value to determine the gasolines resistance to auto(pre)-ignition. The lower the number, the more likely it will auto-ignite. The higher the number the harder it is for the fuel to auto-ignite.

If you car isn't designed for the higher octane numbers, then using the higher octane will not help you in anyway except lighten your pocket book faster. The higher octane is needed for cars that have high compression engines. High compression engines need the higher octane to prevent the pre-ignition from occurring. Buying it otherwise is just wasting money.

dont spend more than you have to hondas are made for 87 though running better fuel isnt a bad idea if not frequently hondas acuras ask for a 91 min rating ive heard that since the higher octane burns more efficiently it burns hotter and can burn out rubber/seals inside the motor from constant use it wont improve mileage and its not a luxury car so use 87 use fuel injector cleaner regularly (im sure youve seen the valves after 5000 miles in the shell vpower ads and thats a brand new motor!!) i used to work for shell they add more detergents to all grades of their gas than required they just want you to buy the most expensive fuel they can produce!

Its not a performance motor so useing the higher octanes is a waste of money not to mention it will run worse your cars computer can measure and detect the octane it will confuse the ECM the cars module and change it seting thus giving you poor performance so use what they tell you too. should be the 87

Just use the 87 octane gas. Higher octanes are more than useless in cars that aren't designed to use them. If anything, using plus will just lower your power and gas mileage.

Definitely. You can always buy the higher octane stuff. It's when you use an octane rating lower than the one specified in your manual that you can run into problems with your engine knocking and so on.
