I would try a different monitor before I buy a new one only to discover its your video card. Try new video drivers and hook your monitor up to a different computer. Click the reset on the monitor too. Also make sure your cord is snug at monitor and computer.

Sounds more like a video card, do you have a second monitor you can borrow and hook up to it?
Either that or someone has been playing with the monitor's or Video Card's Brightness and Gamma settings from the sounds of it.
Typically dying monitors get very dim rather than brighter, though I suppose the red might be dead if it's an LCD monitor.

I would say the monitor is on its last leg. I would at least check to make sure the cable is connected to your computer securely. Then check the brightness and contrast settings and try to set them lower. However, it really sounds like something is wrong with the monitor. What do you mean by package deal?

Get it checked by a technician.
Sometimes the colors can be corrected by adjustments.
