I'm afraid you need to be more specific on the location you are considering. Our country is pretty big and varied. Prices on the East Coast are cheaper than the West Coast, but moderate in the Central States. In Minneapolis 2/2 house would range from $1000 -$1500, while an apartment might be $750 -$950

This is an almost impossible question to answer. If you check the costs IRS uses in evaluating ability to pay there is an about 800% difference between the cheapest places to live and the most expensive. Their numbers include utilities as well as rent.

Not sure about CA Real Estate law but I believe it is similar to TX. If they are renting NO, it must be a single family, if they own it I don't think there is much you can do about it, you might contact your city code enforcement and ask them.

It varies wildly, by thousands of dollars, depending on where you live. It can be as low as $500 or as high as $10,000 or more per month.

Go here: http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/housing/ahs/ahs.html or here: http://www.census.gov/
At either site you will find a list of median and average rental prices by state.
