Retmil gives good strong advice.

A few additional tips... pick, if possible, HO scale. You can then make a quick visit to a good model-railroad shop and buy nice little details like window-frames, Coke Machines, garbage cans, pay-phones, etc. They will also have "grass" in nice sheets, the correct paints, and cars for the parking lot.

Good Luck

Hi:

First off the bat is what scale are you going to make it?

1:12, ( 1/12 or dollhouse scale) 1:44, ( O- scale) 1:87( HO-Scale) 1:100( architectural) , 1:144...ect

#2:

Get pictures of the front, Right and left sides views and the back of the real world building your making a scale model of and get a person to hold a yard stick in front of each shot of the building. So if have to figure a size comparation of some object or the distance in postion something you something to do with.

What are the real world buliding measurements. Go see City hall and look for where they keep the blueprints for the building your trying to make. Be honest; and tell them you want to make a model of this buliding for a school project ( i'm assuming here) or use the photographs you made an do your measurements from that. okay

#3 Do your Scale conversion from what scale you chosed from # 1

For example

If you chose 1:144 scale for the scale model size and the real world buliding your make of is 100 feet high by 50 feet long and 60 feet in width than do the following :

100 *12 = 1200 real world inches
50*12= 600 real world inches
60*12= 720 real world inches

then

1200/144 = 8.3333 or 8 5/16 inches high
600/144 = 4.16666 or 4 1/8 long
720/144 = 5 inches in width

Your scale model of this buliding will be

8 5/16 high by 4 1/8 inch long by 5 inch in width

Now with that out of the way

Next:

How detailed it this bulding needs to be?

If very detailed ,Then you going to be doing a lot of # 3's for each object

If not then do # 3 for the object you need to use with it

Then what material are you going to make with ?

wood ,clay styo-floam,plastic,metal glass, plaster.... etc

Than start build each object and than assemble or glue it together, let it dry and your done.

However I like Robert S answer - Your better off going this way. Unless you like building thing from scratch
Either way Have fun with it

Thanks robert S for your answer.

Hope this helps

Foam core board is an easy material with which to work, be sure you have a strong ruler and a sharp boxknife or exacto knives. Make prelim sketches of your plan, measurements. "Measure twice, cut once!" is an old theater law.
The foam core paints well, and can be masking taped to form a portable model.

Use search in picture mode to look at hotel elevations. Lots of hotels will send your their brochures. Give you virtual tours of the rooms.
