to be doctors? I think the NHS should reflect British society. It seems to me that it is easier and cheaper to recruit from abroad. Why is Britain allowing their young to be wasted still???

Despite what some other answerers have speculated, an article on the front page of the Telegraph today (21 Sep 2007) said that one quarter of doctors given training posts this year (which lead to jobs) where educated outside of Europe. Therefore the number of 'foreign' junior doctors is higher still as this figure doesn't take into account international students trained in the UK and doctors from medical schools within the EU (like Germany or Romania).

The reason why I would agree this is excessively high is because it costs the government £250 000 ($500 000) to train a doctor, and by having any British doctors unemployed is a bad waste of money.

Also, I reject the claim that the foreign doctors are somehow better. The system of medical education in the UK is very different to that used in most other countries. In Britain, a medical student (unless from Oxford or Cambridge) will start learning about, and experiencing working with patients in the first year. However, in most other countries, a more old-fashioned system is used where doctors are expected to be very knowledgeable about the human body (regardless of the usefulness of this information) and will not come into contact with patients year 3 or 4 of the programme.

Now, to answer your question as to why so many doctors are from abroad. I would say the main reason is because there were not enough doctors who were trained in Britain so we looked elsewhere. However, about 8 years ago, the government enlarged many medical schools and built several more. This means that from next year onwards there will be a few extra thousand British-trained doctors a year. And therefore the need for imported doctors is much less.

This question comes up again and again and the answer is simple.

Firstly, It's because the 'foreign' doctors for the most part are British anyway. Perhaps your question should read why are all our doctors not white?

Secondly, it's because these 'foreigners' are cleverer than us.

And lastly, it's because the vast queue of British Uni students who want to be doctors see it as a way to earn a lot of money. The vast majority will not make the grade because they are not clever enough, or they are too lazy to work for the god knows how many years at medical school it takes to become a fully qualified doctor. And when they realise they're not going to earn vast wads of cash for many many years drop out.

That's why!

Because you can't turn millions of "waiting to train" not-yet-doctors loose on the public. How would you like a loved family member being "treated" by an unqualified person pretending to be a physician?

Actually, there are really not "millions" waiting to train as doctors. Of those who are "wanna be's" many of them will not make the grade. there is a very stringent pre-medical school standard required, and if you don't measure up, you are rejected.

To get on a medical degree course, you need at least 3 grade A's at A level. Where are the "millions ready and able to train"? They just aren't there!

It's an expensive and difficult degree course, and there would be no point in lowering the entrance standards.

The country is ready to accept either. The problem is that the 2 who are running who fit your definitions would not be good for the country. Many people recognize this fact and it is unlikely that either will be elected this year.

Well if enough people go through medical school they won't have to recruit from overseas. Ask young people the same question. The opportnities are there for people to apply to med school - its up to them.

I don't think it a good idea to take the doctors from their own countries, where the people will be in greater need of them.
