The Roman Empire was an oligarchy. The concept of Socialism was not invented until the 20th century. What makes a society Socialist is not that the Federal Government provides mail service or national defense, but that the Federal Government controls all wealth, property and means of production and rations them according to its own rules. Participation is mandatory. Social Security is a socialist program. Welfare is a socialist program. Medicare and Medicaid are socialist programs. A 401k retirement account is not a socialist program because you can opt out and you maintain posession of your own wealth. The Mail service is a controlled monopoly not a socialist program. You do not have to send anything by mail if you don't want to. You can use a private delivery service. Providing bread for the poor is not the job of the Federal Government either. The Constitution requires that such programs, if they exist at all, are left to the States to provide. The same for Education. The same for roads and bridges. A lot of people get confused because the Interstate Highway system was a Federal Program. It was but that was Constitutional because it was done for National Defense purposes. You see, after WWII President Eisenhower realized that we had a serious problem in our national defense. We had no way to transport massive amounts of men and equipment from Coast to Coast or Border to Border. That is what he Interstate Highway system was built to provide. That also explains why it has long stretches of straight roadway with no overhead obstructions. They were designed to be used as emergency runways for aircraft. Ask an old guy like me and you lean stuff. *

Well that is a unique argument with a different twist. Collecting taxes is not socialist. Spending Taxes on social programs is. The more taxes you collect, the more social programs you provide the more socialist you are. Now if I recall history correctly, we had a war for Independence based on taxes, something about the Stamp Tax. You must remember the Tea Party they had in Boston Harbor, or how about the Whiskey Rebellion, eventually an over taxed society will revolt and civil war will ensue.

So we haven't advanced since the Mesopotamians and Egyptians huh?
Please keep us mired in the dark ages, by paying tribute to the ruling elite.
Hey white flame, Corporate Income tax, which is constitutional unlike Individual Income tax which is not, pays 100% of the federal government's budget. Your income tax goes to pay interest on the federal reserve note we borrow from the Federal Reseve Bank. Your income tax does not pay to keep the federal government afloat.

I realize how much liberals hates education.. but just once you might want to consider it. Take the time to learn what socialism actually is.
Tax and government services does NOT equal socialism. Socialism involves government control on the distribution of wealth.. a canal doesn't qualify.

Keeping canals open, having food reserves, providing a military ARE NOT SERVICES.
That's national security.
The argument is not against collecting taxes to provide national security, national defense, a sound national monetary system or protection against disaster.
It's against collecting money for the government to do things for you that you should do for yourself.
Check what slope you're on before you define it as slippery.

Collecting taxes is a necessary part of any society that wishes to progress. An entirely powerless central government cannot help a nation advance as a whole.

Funny how the democrats get blamed for tax hikes when they have no choice. There is always a republican in office ahead of them running up a record deficit.
