Coriolis effect. It has to do with the Earth's rotation. Same thing that causes toilets to flush counter clock-wise in the northern hemisphere, and clock-wise in the southern hemisphere.

This is due to the coriolis force brought about by the the rotation of the earth. It is an apparent force which causes deflection of the wind to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This force varies with the wind speed and with latitudes. It is maximum at the poles and zero at the equator. So a cyclone in the Northern Hemisphere is deflected counter clockwise and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere respectively by this force.

The reason is the Coriolis force which is an apparent force that is caused by the rotation of the earth. The force is opposite due to the fact that the curvature of the southern hemisphere is opposite the curvature of the northern hemisphere but the earth rotates only in one direction. So since the curvature is opposite, the direction of the force is opposite as well.

still drives the weather eastward.
