Because he is an incredible song writer and one of the most underrated guitarists I know of. I'm not a huge country fan (more of a Deadhead), but I'm a huge Willie fan.

All of the answer above me are correct...and the fact that he is not a sellout. And he is down to earth, just saw a question about Garth Brooks...what a sellout was in it for the money...he made it then screwed his fans...Willie still plays concerts not because he needs the money but because he has a true love of the music and the fans.

Not only a great singer and song writer, when Nashville didn't like him he went his on to do his music his way, part of the outlaw gang like Waylon Jennings,Jessi Colter ,Kris Kristofferson ,Johnny Cash, David Allen Cole and Meryl Haggard -some of the greats who refused to follow like sheep Nashville's ideas of country music.God bless them all!
