An independent variable is something that you can change. A dependent variable is something that changes as the result of something else (an independent variable) changing.

In an equation like
Y = 3*X + 2

X is the independent variable and Y (which changes when X changes) is the dependent variable

If you have a function f(x) = y, for example : x^2 + 2x -4 = y
Then y is said to be dependent on x, because as x varies (as in variable?), you get different values of y. Therefore, in this example, x is independent, and y is dependent.
