as a learned real estate person would tell you - location, location, location! because it is where it is/was, the crescent was repeatedly invaded, burned, sacked, looted, rebuilt, etc. think for a minute. if it was ideal for civilizations to grown and flourish, why wouldn't it be ripe for invasion? as the saying goes, "if you build it, they will come." all kinds of 'them'.

The answer is in the question. Exactly because it was 'fertile'. It was called that to distinguish it from the surrounding areas which were far less use agriculturally as they were not watered by the rivers the crescent was between.
