My landlords have always been ***** and today I heard pounding on my door and I didnt answer it since we live in a REALLY bad neighborhood and the landlords didnt let us know anyone was coming here.

Well I heard Keys in the door and this guy walked in! He was the water and gas guy and he said your landlord gave me a key because he said someone would be home but you wouldnt open the door!!!!

Can they do that?! I dont want people walking in here! I wasnt even dressed or anything thank god my robe was nearby! What can I do about this?! I feel unsafe and violated.

our lease says we need 24 hours notice before someone cames in. The water and gas guy was here for the meter which is OUTSIDE!

He can't do that without your express permission. Sue him.

In most states, landlords must give you notice when they intend to enter your apartment, unless it is an emergency.

So, it depends on why the water and gas guy was there.

Because the landlord has this right, you should at least respond through the door when someone is knocking, or else be dressed when they decide to come in.

Edit on your additional details - report this to the water/guy company. Sounds like their employee has unlawfully entered your place.

File a complaint against the management company with the housing board in your area.

You cannot refuse to let the water and gas man in. You cannot refuse to let the landlord in.
If you put a dead bolt lock on the inside of your door, you will end up paying for damage to the door.
