If you are planning to operate multiple devices in your house I'd recommend nothing smaller than 5000 watts. Install a transfer panel and connection is quick, easy, and safe.

That would depend on how many things you plan on running off of it. You would need to figure out the power needs for the things you will be using. Are you going to be using cords or tying into the electrical system? You need a special change-over switch if you tie into the house lines. These are used when going from the main electric to the generator. It protects the linemen from getting electrocuted while working on the main lines.
