I wondered if someone knows whether or not in the event of a power steering pump leaking on a Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec E (petrol), would it be possible that power steering fluid could find its way near the timing belt and tensioner etc? Has anyone ever had any experience of this?

sure it could, the belt runs the pump and if the steering pump is leaking it can drip onto the belt.

The timing belt is behind a cover, its unlikely to contaminate the belt as long as the cover is still fitted,I haven't heared of a problem like this occurring in the past.

Check the hose clips first then the hoses are not cracked , most unusual for steering pumps to leak
