K is short hand for Kilo or 1000. So any number with a K after it indicates thousands.

Hence - 500K = 500,000

In that context it usually stands for "Kilometer".

It can also mean a thousand dollars...so 500 k would be five hundred thousand dollars. But if it's for math homework, it's most likely kilometers.

It means 1000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilo-) and if you're old enough to have a daughter, you really should know that already.

Usually k stands for 1000, as in I make 100k a year.
