The paint you need to use is called Pebeo Porcelaine. http://www.dickblick.com/zz029/08/
You can use regular paint brushes or q-tips and the paint will wash out with regular soap and water until it is baked in the oven. (Although I would recommend washing it from clothing as soon as possible so it doesn't set in.) I've been very successful with doing these projects with younger kids.
Once the dishes are painted, you wait 24 hours and bake it in your oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. The dishes are dishwasher safe and nontoxic.
I gave you the website for Dick Blick because I found their prices for the Pebeo paints were better than my local craft store, plus you have the benefit of purchasing prepackaged color blends. You can still check with your local craft store (such as Michael's) to see if they carry the product.

RE:
Can acrylic paint be used for dishes?
I am trying to find a way to have preschoolers paint and decorate dishes for gifts. I was thinking plain white stoneware with acrylic paint, but then wondered if the paint would come off in the dishwasher or peel off with use. Also, is it foodsafe? Thanks.

If memory serves me correctly, there is a dish paint you can use. Go to Michael's or Hobby Lobby and I'm sure they can help you. Seems like in a past Vacation Bible School craft class we had the children painting dishes and it was paint that was food safe and wash safe.

You need a paint that will work for dishes, you can buy it at craft stores. The acrylic paint will peel off, before it even makes it to the dishwasher. It will peel off if you rub it.

I used to use just soap and water and it's really the best way, but I've reacently been using odorless paint thinner. It works really well and doesn't damage your brushes. Just make sure you hang your brushes upside down for drying and make sure all the paint is out. Don't get the paint thinner on clothes or anything you don't mind ruining. Remember to get odorless because the other really stinks. You only need a little and don't mix with water. This should make the process alot smoother. I get mine from Hobby Lobby. Good Luck

No. You need to get paints that are fired in the oven. Some of them even can be washed in the dishwasher. You can find these kinds of paint at the site below.

Your local craft store has glass paints that could also be used, but most, if not all, of them must be hand washed. If you use these kinds of paints, apply them to the back side of clear plates which you can pick up at any Dollar Tree store. I think you are going to find this might be a rather expensive project. Why not have them make place mats of their drawings, or paintings, and laminate each side to make place mats?
