Between the Patriot Act, and now Pres Bush wanting to make increased domestic spying a permanant thing- it makes me wonder- do you think this president respects (or even understands) our civil liberties, and the Constitution?

And likewise, do you think Bush's ardent right wing neocon supporters respect the Constitution? With many of the right wingers calling for the arrest of people who engage in dissent (dissent IS freedom btw), I'm left to wonder if they have any clue what 'freedom' really means...

Keep in mind that the Patriot Act does nothing to reduce the freedoms in the Constitution. Now it dings the Privacy Act of 1974 a little bit, but privacy and freedom are too different things.

The Dem's, on the other hand, do much to impact the Bill of Rights by introducing limits to Free Speech with their Hate "Thought" Crime legislation and infringing upon the Right to Keep and Bear Arms with their "gun control" policies.

Not sure why some folks are so upset at the Patriot Act, unless they're afraid that if they are spied upon, they might get caught engaging in sodomy or something.

Of course he respects the Constitution on most issues. However, I do wonder about his refusal to protect our borders, kicking those out whom have broken our immigration laws... That's a whole other topic though. The Patriot Act and domestic wire tapping. If you're not a terrorist, or not communicating with terrorists then you've got nothing to worry about. If the FBI wants to listen to my gossiping to my mom, or bi+ching about a bad day I've had schooling the kids, then they're more than welcome to it. Let there be no wire tapping on the terrorists, allow them to be able to communicate another attack and then, Lib, you'll see what "losing ones freedom" is all about.

Take a look at what FDR did during WW2 or what Lincoln did during the War Between the States. What President Bush is doing is quite mild by comparison. We must be prepared to take every measure to destroy the Islamo-Fascists.

I think He respects America's freedom and security and the constitution. It's spying on foreign terror suspects not innocent Americans. Liberals don't!

I don't think he understands the limits of the Constitution, and I don't think those of you who are vehemently opposed to the Patriot Act understand it either.

What rights are you referring to? What constitutional limitation is being exceeded? Specifically.

It seems like all the politicians and special interests seem to want to tell everybody what to do, I think they should refer to the Constitution more.

Honestly...no.

Besides the examples that you sited, he advocated a constitutional amendment to outlaw same sex marriage just to pander to his base and win an election. Regardless of how you feel about that issue, you wouldnt want to alter the constitution, this countrys most sacrosanct document, to further your own political career.

The question is what the party thinks will get votes, not just bush. If theres not enough voters who disapprove of the idea then theres nothing to stop it.

The fact that he appointed an incompetent like Gonzales to guard the Constitution should give you the answer.
