They see their own mortality and try for one more grasp for glory. Kind of a mid-life crisis thing.

I've seen that too. I think it has to do with their dealing with stress (poorly), and a realization of their own mortality. When they see their father dying, they realize that there's a lot of things they personally haven't done yet, and time is running out. What that does is trigger a sort of mid-life crisis and all the subsequent irresponsible behavior.

is not only men,it happens also to women,i guess its because when someone u love is either ill or dead something in your life lose balance,and sometimes sex is an escape,an easy one,but its something u can have control on,unlike your life at that moment.
so u let yourself lose trying to make up the emptiness in your life at that point with something else, some fill that with sex,meaningless one if u like,cause the last thing u want to do is to Think.

For the same reason women do when their mothers die. They can see the writing on the wall, you life is almost over, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOU LIFE- WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO BEFORE YOU GO.

Just another one of their excuses to justify what they are doing. It has nothing to do with anything else - some of them will stop at nothing for a good excuse.

Wanting to have sex is a natural reaction to death by both sexes. It's not just men and it's not just fathers dying (or knowing they will die soon.)
