It seems that a lot of people are against the idea of marriage, and seem to be highly critical of those that choose to do so? Recently, as I have become engaged, I hear it a lot, as if it's "uncool" to get married now a days. Do you think that marriage has the potential for becoming outdated in the next decade or so?

Where do you think our society is headed?

I think marriage is gonna be around for as long as sexual reproduction is around. The rules may change, the procedures may change, but the "hey look we're officially partners" idea will remain around for a long, long time.

It's kind of like religion - hard as one may try to purge society of religion (look at the Soviets), it endures. On the whole, people crave structure, although there are always rebels, in every generation.

I've never heard a sentiment of it being "uncool" to get married. Maybe it's because I hang out with older, more mature folks - and the above sentiment sounds like something a 16-year-old would blurt out.

I don't think marriage is going anywhere. Being that just about every society in the past and present has some way of sanctioning family unions, it seems like it's a concept that will endure for some time to come.

Marriage is thousands of years old and the rules and expectations are, too. Things change. Marriage in the modern world is simply not necessary. Women are no longer chattel. (The Muslims may never learn this.) The laws and rules governing marriage are cumbersome in today's world. People live so long now that the only reason to stay married forever is if sex is not an issue. People move a lot more now. Women decide things and earn money and can deal with work and children so men are no longer able to keep them subservient. Change can be good. Just as with the issue of gay marriage, these changes have no effect at all on society unless society wants them to have.

Marriage is no more "outdated" than it has ever been.

Just because 50% of the couples don't have the emotional maturity or sense of compromise to get along, that's no excuse to trash the concept of marriage.

So, what's the alternative?

I think more and more people are realizing that marriage is unnecessary, and that is a good thing. It is never a good thing to bash someone else's way of life, though. We need to learn to respect and accept each other's differences. Personally, I do hope marriage is on its way out. But if you feel it's the best thing for you personally, go for it.

I don't think it will get outdated. Everyone has the right to choose the way they live their lives.

The insitution of marriage will never become outdated. It is a God ordained union. We can skirt it all we want but it will never be outdated.

Marriage is God's law. Sex is only for the married. If you have sex out of marriage, you are committing fornication. Marriage will never be out dated.

A woman should never have sex with a man who is not committed to her in marriage. She cheapens herself if she does give herself to some one not commited to her. A man who asks for the privillage of sex before marriage is totally disrespecting the woman.
