Please do not take offence, I am studying psychology and am hoping to gain an insight. My question is, Why do a lot (not all, I know) of lesbian women seem to try hard to look like men? Surely if you find women more attractive it would make more sense to look feminine, and other lesbians would find you more attractive because you were feminine. I am guessing that there is a link/correlation between being a 'tomboy' and becoming a lesbian.

I know that not all transvestite men are gay, and gay men usually do not try to look feminine although they do act feminine. Thank you for answering my question.

A few possible reasons...because the clothing and hairstyles are more comfortable.

Because they identify more with the masculine side of their personaltiies.

Because their brains are actually physically a good deal more masculinized than other, more feminine lesbians brains, and so they feel more comfortable projecting a more masculine image. The reasons for that, maybe they hope to be treated more like a male than a female in civil social interaction, and /or in consensual sexual situations with women.

Because many of us femmes think it's hot.

That's all I can think of right now.

P.S.
Here's another one. Some gay women prefer to look masculine in dress, hairstyle and /or body language for the very same reasons that heterosexual males do. (How one chooses to look is not dictated by what kind of genitalia they have.)

Im bisexual. I cant really give you an accurate answer because Im pretty feminine and I also go for more feminine girls.

**I think it is because some women that go for more feminine ladies also enjoy the role of being the dominant one in control. I might be completely wrong, but in society, a 'normal' relationship consists of a more masculine figure and a feminine figure. Because that idea has been put into our heads, some people feel that this is the way it HAS to be.

some men and some women are more masculine.
some men and some women are more femininine.

cant get me in a dress or i will vomit and then burst into flames because i am not only uncomfortable, but makes me feel unwell.-like in the wrong body, i wanna hang myself unwell. I will wear dress pants, blouses, and such and look very nice.
make up is over rated, i dont need it. my skin is great, and i would hate to cover my freckles. its made of animal fat, so, i dont need or want that smeared over my face. ick, of all places to wipe something so gross.
I am not wearing shredded jeans and flannel here, but i am not what people would consider feminine.
yes, you are very right with the tomboy assumption, a masculine woman was probably a tomboy, not to say all tomboys are now masculine though.

"Surely if you find women more attractive it would make more sense to look feminine, and other lesbians would find you more attractive because you were feminine"

not true, you flunked that portion of your psychology test.
some woman prefer a more masculine man, or visa versa
I have never had a problem, and i only date more feminine woman too.

its called preference, and since when do looks or physical attraction rule the world of love?
I do think you are over analyzing something that you dont need to. people are people, all different in our own ways, it takes different things to make us each happy.
and rubbing whale fat on my face makes me the opposite of happy.

I believe it depends entirely on whether or not they feel interested in imitating a hetero couple. Also, I am sure you are right that such women were probably tomboys as children. Not so much that they became lesbian because they were tomboys, but they were naturally lesbian and that's why they liked being tomboys.

Having said all that, don't forget the extent to which our Baby Boom generation started wearing clothes out of the men's store because they were more comfortable and durable. I wore jeans and tee shirts (both rather man-like) and then when I got too big to look decent and be comfortable in jeans, I wore denim coveralls like a farmer for quite a while. I'm a bisexual with more interest in hetero than lesbian, but enough bi not to care if people thought I was a bull dike. [Will that get past the censor?]

Feminine and masculine traits are in one's nature.

Lesbian woman present themselves in the way they are most comfortable. Some are feminine, some are both feminine and masculine (tweeners), some are strictly masculine. There are many different sexual dynamincs in the lesbian community. Sorry, but the assumptions you state are wrong. Believe it or not, there are a lot of gay feminine woman who are only attracted to masculine gay woman. (For me, thank God on that last point. Heh Heh!)

I did take offense at the question. Whenever someone says dont take offense, I usually do... because they KNOW they are going to offend someone but do it anyway.

Ive seen this question about a billion times now and if you wanted answers (and plenty of them) all you had to do was type your question into the search box above and get the list.

As to your study of psychology, which year are you in? I majored in psychology and the subject of lesbians wanting to look like men NEVER came up.

If you want real answers... true answers... why not get to know some of these lesbians who try so hard to look like men and just ask them? For that matter, find a few girly girl femmes who love them to round out your report...?

*edit*
BTW... I think they're pretty damned hot, too.

Probably not, if you weren't that into it. Sounds like you only hooked up with your friend in response to a dare, and because your boyfriend wanted to watch you do it, not because you really wanted to. No self-respecting lesbian would make out with another girl in front of a guy to turn him on. She'd do it because SHE enjoyed it, not because she wanted to please a man. At most, you might be bi-curious. But I think you're straight.

I know this is directed to lesbians but i think I can help. I am bisexual, but when ever i go through periods where i like girls my body will act differently. I will act more boyish and i can't help it what so ever. The way I walk will be very manly, you know, there won't be any swing in my hips, stuff like that. My handwriting will become more messy instead of being pretty and loopy. I would change from wearing flowery dresses to wearing baggy jeans and a t-shirt. My voice will be lower and manly and I will lose my grace when i do ballet. It really makes me upset because I know deep inside I am not like that. But when I like girls my brain will start to act different and i can't control it. And not everyone is like this. when you see lesbians you will see really girly type lesbians and then you will see the more boyish looking ones; the ones that really short hair and have baggy jeans etc... People's hormones are different and they can't help it.

You seem to have missed the eccentric gay males who dress and act more feminine then women do.... But as with the gay women.. not all of them do this!

Besides, that's kind of like asking why any people dress and look so different. It's a matter of choice!
