the reason being if you turn your a/c off the house begins collecting humidity, this means carpets, furniture, drapes, etc then your a/c has to remove it all again before it starts really cooling, so just turn the thermostat up a little just so the a/c will kick on one in a while the keep the moisture out of your house

If you do not have a programmable thermostat then just move it up 1 or 2 degrees during the day time. It really makes a difference.
We are in Florida and keep ours at 79 degrees (remember it is over 80 most of the year). When we leave for a day or a week we move it to 82. In Florida shutting it off is not a good Idea due to our moisture levels.
If you are not electrically inclined do not replace your thermostat yourself. Incorrect wiring can blow out your Air Conditioner.

I listened to a speaker from the local electric company talk about this subject recently. He said you spend more on electricity if you turn the unit off (and leave home for a while) then if you set the thermostat at a comfortable temperature and leave it there. His explanation was having to cool the house back down used more electricity than leaving the central air conditioning on. He was talking about day-to-day a/c use, not going on a week long vacation of something.

Hi Monica,
Never turn the AC completely off unless you will be gone for several weeks. It is much more cost efficient to just raise the temp on the thermostat in the morning before you leave to the middle 70s. When you come home, just lower the temp to your preference. If you have a programmable thermostat, this is easily accomplished.

Set the temp a few degrees higher when you will not be home. This prevents the whole house needing to be completely cooled when you get home.

if its really hot outside, dont completely turn it off, then it just takes so much longer to cool it down. if you can stand it, set it at a little higher than average , then when you get home, you can put it back while you are there. should save you a little bit

You can save 10-15% on your utility bill by replacing your thermostat with a programmable one. With the standard program you can set it back when you go to work and at night. It is easy to replace the thermostat, you can do it yourself. For more info see the thermostat page at my source.

It takes more energy to cool it. But take heart, summer is almost over. Thank goodness, summer is only three or four months long.

it all depends on how long you are going to be gone, if you are gone for 8-9 hrs while your at work shut it off but if your gone 2-3 hrs running errands leave it on
