Although it's not original, my favorite has always been:
Haikus are funny
but sometimes they don't make sense

Traditional haikus, even those in English, use nature to express a revelation or create an image. It uses the last line as a turn, a parallel thought that brings focus on the poem's subject. A traditional haiku must also use "season" words.

More contemporary haikus retain the use of the turn in the last line, but are on any number of topics.

Your "haiku" met the beat requirements, but not the form.

Chili dogs at night
Bark until you let them out
Dinner down the drain

To find everyone gone.
Realized it wasn't my home.
