iMac and Toshiba Laptop are in question.

There are built in Firewalls in Routers.
It sounds like you have it confiqured inncorrectly.
If you have more than one firewall it may be a conflict.

I don't have any experience of mac's I'm afraid, so can't comment on them.
For your Toshiba though: personally, I run a third-party software firewall in conjunction with my Routers firewall & have never experienced any trouble doing so.

I consider it an extra layer of protection. You could always switch off a software firewall OR uninstall one if you decided to try it & experienced any difficulties.

Installing a firewall is not irreversible.

Well the Mac is a Mac.

The toshiba is a PC.

If they are directly communicating. Or trying to, you could have some compatibility issues.

Your questions is kind of unclear.

no not usually unless the settings have been set purposely to block each other .. easy enough to disable a software firewall if its in question just to see ..
