i want an operation called otoplasty (pinning back of the ears) because my ears stick out more than normal, i've wanted it for ages but i have never told my parents and i don't know how to ask them as i will be embarrassed?
does anyone have any ideas on how i can ask them?
does anyone know anyone who has had otoplasty before?
does anyone know if it's free for kids under 16 on the NHS in the UK?
thanks so much ! xx

I certainly hope not and I doubt it. 15 is no age to be making decisions about cosmetic surgery. Virtually every teenager is insecure about their physical appearance--ears stick out too much, teeth are too crooked, feet are too big, too skinny, too fat, too tall, too short, you name it. And they're so focused on these supposed "abnormal" physical traits that they imagine them to be completely defining of how other people see them. Really, it's all just part of genetic variation, which is a good thing. It's good for people to look different from each other and little physical quirks can be very endearing and attractive! If you're being teased, try to remember that kids will use any arbitrary difference to make other people feel small, often as a defense against their own insecurities. When I was a kid I got teased for having freckles. My mom got teased for being short. When you enter the adult world, (or at least the not-kid world), you'll realize that people are much more accepting of physical differences because they're not as defensive about the way THEY look. Although a lot of people retain some insecurities about the way they look when they're adults and there's something to be learned from that--I bet if a lot of people were totally honest with you, they'd confess some insecurity about a particular physical trait that never even crossed your mind as weird or unattractive! Other people are never as focused on an individual's physical quirks as the individual. Your ears are not the threat to your happiness or social or romantic success that you may imagine them to be.
The other thing to remember is that adolescence can be a physically awkward time and many kids "grow into" their features more as they become adults. Trust me, when you're grown up, you and your friends will probably do a lot of laughing at each other's teenage pictures. You don't know how you're going to look in maturity yet. And even if the way you look doesn't change in the way you want, that's okay. You look how you look and there's nothing wrong with that. People shouldn't look like clones, all with "perfect" features, surgically altered according to meaningless social standards.

I hope it's not free in the UK. That's cosmesis. A procedure done for physical betterment not for health reasons. I'd just tell them the truth and maybe have the funds to pay for it yourself. I've had patients who were thrilled with their otoplasty. Keep in mind that a man's ears get bigger with age so the sooner the better.

Tell your parents that they gave you your ears so they should fix'em. BTW Junior.... ^^^ She's from the U.K. the healthcare system there is much different from the US's and some surgery is free. This is cosmetic though which i'm sure doesn't qualify.

Just open your mouth, summon up the courage and tell your parents. Then you can all start planning for the time when it can be done.
I would call around to Plastic Surgeons and ask when you can have it done (age) and what it costs.
