Because the power supply is active as soon as you connect, it creates a load, this will spark at least a little when you connect it. If you are more deliberate pushing it in you get less sparking.

Sparks like that could cause a heat surge..which can be damaging to your laptop. I would suggest plugging the power adapter in to the outlet FIRST, and then plugging the other end into your laptop. That way theres no direct connection right when the plug hits the outlet.

It's a high-power thing. The same thing happens when I plug my Foreman grill in, there's a small spark. It's because of the high wattage of the device. If you unplug your adapter from both your computer and the wall, start by plugging adapter into the outlet, THEN into the computer, and you shouldn't see a spark. This just happens because of the sudden burst of huge electricity being drained from the wall. If it were a lower wattage, you would not see a spark.

It's not the Laptop, the wall socket is BAD.
Or there's not enough Power running
though that wall outlet to run the Laptop.
You are lucky you didn't damage your
Laptop, or start a fire.
See an Electrician about it.

Although it is quite normal for a small spark it sounds as if you do not have a switch on the socket you are using consider getting a surge protector it is a good investment I use a six way strip to protect my computer monitor & printer tv if you buy a belkin one they insure your equipment free if it is damaged by a surge if you are hit by a surge it kills the protector which they replace and your expensive equipment is safe hope this will give you peace of mind

I dunno, but try to connect the laptop to the cord first, then plug it in.
If you have a battery in it, take it out and then plug the laptop. When it's plugged, put the battery back in.
