Wegener was one of the first to theorize that the land masses - the continents - of the earth were not fixed, but always in motion.

Many before Wegener had observed that the continent of Africa looked as if it were a puzzle piece that would fit neatly against the continent of South America, but this observation was dismissed as a coincidence as late as 1970. About that time the idea of "continental drift" began to gain scientific adherents, and further observations, especially of the ocean floor, proved that the continents were in continual, if very slow, motion.

It is now established that all of the world's land mass was at one time contained in one large continent, named "Pangeia" [sp.?]. This large mass was in fact a floating mass that broke apart and came together again continually over long periods of geological time.

What Fredrick said is correct. I would add that the main problem with Wegener's theory was that it didn't contain a mechanism to explain why the continents drifted apart. With the advent of sonar, deep sea probes and other methods to visualize the ocean floor it became apparent that seafloor spreading was responsible for continental drift. The Theory of Plate Tectonics uses mantle convection as the mechanism for seafloor spreading, thus supplanting Continental Drift.
As a side note: Pangaea.

Skippy say he suggested that the continents had been pulled apart by the centrifugal pseudoforce of the Earth's rotation.
Skippy say he was wrong.
