This is not something I plan on doing with my son when he is born. We already have a bassinet for our room, a crib for his and a pack n play for the rest of the house. But I lived in Mexico for a year when I was 16. My grandparents live in San Felipe on the baja and my mother and I moved there for a year. And I saw a lot of the mexican women use big wicker laundry baskets for their newborns. Much like a moses basket or a bassinet, they worked up until the child was about 3 months old. All around the world infants sleep in many different things aside from a crib.

I've known people who used drawers for the baby to sleep in while on vacation.
I put my son in a Moses basket while at my sister's when he was a newborn. Same concept as a laundry basket or drawer.

One day my MIL watched my daughter when she was about 4-5 months old. She let the baby play nearby in a laundry basket with some toys. She lined it with a fleece blanket. When my daughter got sleepy, she laid down and went to sleep. I have pictures of her sleeping in a laundry basket, with her toes sticking out of the holes. That's how I found her when I came to get her. It was priceless.

I did it one time. We went on vacation to visit family and had the car loaded down with baby stuff, but the one thing we forgot was a bassinet or her travel swing. We used a dresser drawer and of course took it out the dresser. She was not that old maybe a month, so she could not crawl out or roll over. It was scarry and the next day we went to the store and bought a paypen for her to sleep in for the rest of the time

I would never lay my newborn in a laundry basket or a dresser. I would be to afraid that they would flip over and fall out.

If you don't have or can't afford a basinette, you can put your baby to sleep in something like that. I got a little moses basket that I used. As long as baby isn't on a soft surface with lots of loose covers, baby will be fine.

Sounds like a scene on vintage cartoons depicting the Old Woman who lived in the shoe. I don't think it's safe in practice and wouldn't let my little ones sleep this way. Perhaps in a controlled setting like a photo shoot with a professional baby photographer, but most likely not.

I have heard of people in the past doing it. My parents never did it to me and I dont plan on doing it when my little on arrives. if times get rough or other circumstances arise, the safest place for a baby to sleep is the floor...they cant fall or roll off anything and hurt themselves.

I tried putting my son in a laundry basket once, because he had fallen asleep without a diaper on due to a horrible rash and he normally slept in bed with us and I didn't want a wet bed! *lol* He didn't fit.
