Logos ARE copyrighted. There are exceptions that allow some people to use them but you need to know some business law to protect yourself.

If you're just running an amateur site and talking about colleges, and including the logos next to the names, the colleges are not likely to cause you any grief. THey'll probably see it some form of advertisement on their behalf. Make sure the logos ARE associated directly with the names of the colleges.

Besides trying to sell goods with company logos on them without licensing, the next big infringement is implying that you're associated with them (intentional or not).

If you use the logo of the university i work at, you will need to obtain a license. the dept that handles that can be located on the university website. the license is required for any commercial exploitation.

If your website is a personal "fan site" or otherwise not commercially linked to products then it probably qualifies for "fair use", particularly if it causes no commercial damage or otherwise disparage the reputation of the school.
