Examine the words:
Quantitative as in Quantity (i.e. How many?)
Qualitative as in Quality (how good?)

Richter scale, area code, and school year (grade) are all items you can put a definite number on are quantitative.

Things like taste, feeling, level of experience which have to be answered with "good", "bad", "so-so" etc are qualitative

Richter is quantitative because it measures a quantity of energy released.

Area code is qualitative because it does not express and quantity. Its a label given to an area in numbers.

Grades in school are also qualitative. You could argue quantitative, but it doesn't really express a quantity but it does represent a level of accomplishment.

anything that can be numerically manipulated and changed by addition, etc. is quantitative; otherwise, it is qualitative.
1) quantitative
2) qualitative (it's numeric but no point in adding an area code)
3)can be both (if the grade is 'A' or 'B' etc. it is qualitative. if it is 80 points etc. it is quantitative as the teacher can change your grade if he or she wants to numerically or you can average the grades.

If your grade in school is given as A, B, C, D or F -- then I would say that your school grade is qualititative. In my school, an A is given for a final average grade from 93-100. Any of those grades will receive an A.

If your school grade is given as a NUMBER, then that would be a quantitative grade.
