There's really no telling when the timing belt will fail. They should be replaced at the recommended mileage to prevent them from getting to the point of failure. Now, if you go past, that's your own risk, it could go 5k miles, or it could go 20k miles, nobody will really know.

The last time I replaced mine, it still looked brand new with 85k miles on it, but it was well worth replacing it to prevent any unnecessary damages caused by trying to save a few bucks instead of changing the belt.

And DON'T EVER POUR SOLVENT in your engine crankcase!! NEVER EVER!!

Certainly don't ever run it with solvent in the crankcase! Doing that WILL reduce the life left in the engine.

you are gettng it when it is about to snap right around 85000 miles . you must have the one with the 3.5 in it , if you take good care of it it will last you a long time . but the ones with the 2.7 liter are the ones that give more trouble than you need. Some of the 2.7 L V6 engines have suffered from failures due to oil sludge contamination. These problems happen when fine engine oil passages become clogged with sludge, and often result in catastrophic failure of the engine. An unknown number of Intrepid owners have been affected.

Bryan K is right! At around 80 to 100 thousand. YES, do the pump on 3.5's too!. On the 3.5, you can get the new belt on with out pulling the crank gear too! Just work it underneath. It will go! 3.3. /3.8 forget about it. They have a chain and gears and I've yet to see one go out. And on all aluminum engines,2.7 and so on. change the oil at 3,000 miles. They run hotter( have you noticed where the catalytic converters run?) And use a good milti grade 5w-20 or 5w-30. Look on the oil cap.

well actually they are recomended to be changed every 60k miles and it depends on how the car was taken care of if it's had the hell ran out of it or if it has been treated good i would at least chang em every 70 to 80k and yeah it aint a bad idea to change the water pump when doing the belts

Generally? , they don't snap Most people replace them before they fail because they are afraid that an open valve will get struck by a piston. Put some solvent in your oil, run the engine, drain old oil, replace with cheap 30weight drain that and put in some good 10w40 this procedure may wash out that **** in your oil passages.

most intrepids have chains and not belts 2.7 chains wear down and go around 80,000 but there is no set time to change the chain. they say replace the belt at 100,000k but it is probably a chain
