My daughter is learning culinary arts at a high school career center. Her friend told me that my daughter said to her that they are going to do some wine tasting. Now, I know that the chef that is training them would never allow them to do anything illegal.

But, we are Mormon (which I think she told chef in the first week of school), and we don't drink alcohol. However, I know that, as a chef, she might be cooking with wines, at least in training.

One suggestion that I heard was that they taste but do not swallow. But, I don't know if even that is good or not.

And maybe I'm borrowing trouble. but, I just want some advice. Thanks.

And, please, no Mormon bashing!

Honestly, I do not think it would be a problem for her to just taste the wine but not swallow it. I will admit that I drink, but in moderation. And I understand you concern for your daughter's introduction to fine wines and spirits. But I doubt it would be enough to get her intoxicated, or have her on the verge of attending any AA meetings. She's going to be introduced to it through cooking so most of the alcohol included within the mixtures and ingredients will be evaporated into the food before anyone can taste it. She just needs to know what it looks like or tastes like in order to chose the correct wines to prepare her meals to perfection. Don't worry, she'll be alright. I think you've raised her with enough morals and values that she'll be able to say "Get the behind me Devil" and move on. Be careful if she makes deviled eggs though, those go straight to your thighs!!

It depends on how many she is tasting. If it is one or two, then that wouldn't be enough to alter her state of mind, which is (if I remember correctly) the main reason that the LDS/Mormon leaders warn against it. If she is seriously considering a career in the culinary arts (and being that she is at a specialized school), she needs to know about wine. If she wants to be taken seriously outside of Utah. No meanness intended, hope that helps.

i have never known "swallowing" when wine tasting, i'm an ex-chef, with 2 friends who are wine appreciation teachers, when they inhale, its to let air filter through to get the flavours going, i do not drink alchohol either-through choice, and i have never had to drink, and swallow, just taste. Can you imagine how drunk people would get when tasting 40, 50 wines at a tasting, your daughter will be given a recepticle to spit into,

During a wine tasting, it is not necessary to swallow the wine. Tasters can swish it around in their mouths and spit it out. Glasses should be provided for that purpose. You daughter should remind her teacher that she can taste but cannot swallow the wine.

Most professional wine tasters/judges will sip the wine, swirl it around in their mouths, and spit it out (to prevent getting drunk during a tasting session). This is a good method to taste the wine and gauge the flavor without actually consuming it.

Do you think God is going to be upset with your daughter if she is cooking with old juice from grapes? That is just silly. Didn't Jesus drink wine? I don't really know what you people believe in, so I'm not knocking you, but c'mon. Your daughter isn't out boozing around and drinking the stuff to get drunk, she is cooking with it to enhance the flavor of the food.

I attended a Stake teens fireplace as a teens myself and this difficulty replaced into presented up. this is an same theory as ingesting non-caffeinated espresso (in spite of the actual incontrovertible truth that all of us understand this is not any longer the caffeine it is the project). I remember being informed no longer to even enable the alcohol contact your lips because this is the creation of evil. If she shall we her preserve down once, this is going to likely be extra worry-free the subsequent time. My youthful brother only went via some culinary training and had to flavor maximum of what he cooked. he's an rather picky eater to commence with and commonly continues to be sparkling of chocolate, milkshakes and maximum vegetables. you do not might want to flavor it in case you do not favor to. The alcohol in a wine-depending sauce will practice dinner out from the publicity to the intense warmth. be certain to point once you chat about it that it must be a determination she's already made, so as that once the celebration arises, she already is known with of what she has to do. sturdy success.

Wine tasting doesn't involve drinking. Please don't do anything to jeopardize her career, let her make her own decisions.
