Theory 1: Conditions on earth allowed the spontaneous formation of organic molecules which then formed basic cells.

Theory 2: Microbes arrived on an asteroid that impacted on the surface.

What evidence is there for each/either???
How can you explain each/either???

This is my biology homework and I don't have a clue, so anything explained nice and gently would really help!
Thank you very much.

"Panspermia" is the theory that life came to earth from another location in space. That would explain how life evolved at such a rapid race. This theory is somewhat supported by the fact that not one rock on fossil record is shown to have microbial form of life. Even though that is very little proof, it is the only proof available.
Another theory is that life "synthesized itself," which means that if conditions were right (which they could have possibly been on the early earth) life may have arisen from combinations of chemicals that aren't present today. The primordial soup theory says that self replicating molecules spontaneously formed on the early earth.

There is no evidence for either.
This should not be homework for biology since it is not science - it is a philosphical idea.

In fact there is good evidence that spontaneous formation of life (abiogenesis) is impossible.

The true answer is that life was created. This fits much better with observed evidence.
