This may be hard to even imagine, but, as Professional Handicappers League member Jimmy Boyd points out, Michigan still can win the Big Ten championship and go on to play in the New Year's Day Rose Bowl, though it's ALMOST a sure bet that it won't be in a replay of the 2007 holiday game.

Michigan started on the long road back to redemption last weekend following pitiful early-September performances by spanking Notre Dame 38-0 to go to 1-2 on the season, though respectability remains a light year or so away.

The Wolverines began the campaign on shaky footing with back-to-back losses to Appalachian State and Oregon. Penn State, meanwhile, jumped off to a 3-0 mark with victories over Florida International, Buffalo and the same woeful Irish team that the Wolverines whipped.

Observers believe Michigan's conference kickoff match with 10th-ranked Penn State Saturday could paint a pretty good picture of how things in the Big Ten shape up in what may be legendary Nittany Lions Coach Joe Paterno's last hurrah.

Penn State is laying 4 points in Ann Arbor and the total is 43.

"I'm not sold on Penn State yet," said Boyd, who hails from Big Ten country himself.

"They haven't played anyone and the Big Ten always is a different story.

"Although Notre Dame hasn't been impressive, Michigan beating them so convicingly was crucial for this team.

"The Wolverines still can win the Big Ten, believe it or not.

"I think we'll see both Penn State and Michigan's true colors this Saturday.

"The Irish are just young and inexperienced.

"There is some talent in South Bend and this team will get better as the season goes on."

Notre Dame is receiving 4 points from Michigan State on Saturday.

It has been more than a decade since the Lions won a game between the pair, with their last triumph coming on Nov, 16, 1996.
.
Michigan has won eight straight versus PSU and leads the series 9-3.

The Wolverines' downhill slide began this past New Year's when they lost the Rose Bowl 32-18 to Penn State.

Both teams faced disppointment earlier in the season when Florida and Ohio State beat them out of BCS berths, sending both squads to Pasadena.

USC has emerged from the first few weeks of the 2007 season with wins over Iowa and Nebraska and the nation's No. 1 collegiate ranking.

The Trojans are giving 27 points to Washington State this weekend.

In another game that could be a factor in how things ultimately shake out in the Big Ten, Wisconsin is laying 9 1/2 to Iowa.

If AppSt played Michigan 10 times this year they'd probably lose 6 or 7. Which would be pretty good for a IAA team (most would lose 10 out of 10) going against a IA power.

The only thing that matters, though, is what they do on the one afternoon they DO play -- and as it turns out, on that one afternoon AppSt was the better team. And while the Michigan players are probably win-7-out-of-10 games better, their coaching staff isn't.

When a team loses a game they should win 80% of the time, the problem isn't the players, its the coaches. In football you only play a dozen games a year so you better show up for each one and win the ones you're supposed to win. When you don't, blame the coaches for not being prepared. I think Lloyd Carr's teams have been guilty of not showing up ALOT -- and I think its time Michigan made a change.

If you remember, the game was down to the wire at the end. We didn't know WHAT was going to happen. I think U of M played ASU pretty hard, actually. They were just inconsistent and showed a lot of their weak spots.
I don't know if the Mountaineers are a better team or not...I do think they were hungrier for the victory than U of M. It seemed as if the Wolverines were comfortable- playing at home, a non-conference game...it was supposed to be a cake walk for them. By the time they realized ASU wasn't coming to Ann Arbor just to roll over and let them have their way, it was too late and they didn't recover from the shock.

As a longtime UM fan, I can tell you without a doubt that UM has always struggled against spread offenses with QB's who can run. Vince Young shredded UM twice, the Notre Dame QB's in the 80's destroyed Michigan (Tony Rice, etc) Troy Smith was a beast against UM, as was the Oregon QB this year. I just don't think UM matches up well against these types of offenses. If Appalachain State had a more traditional offense, the game would have been a lot different. Unfortunately, they do use a wide open offense and took advantage of a Michigan team that wasn't prepared and never adjusted.

If I understand you correctly.....

Michigan would have beat the 'moutaineers' 9/10 times they played.

the Wolverines are not playing well....and App State is a hell of a Championship Subdivision team....but that doesn't mean that ASU is 'beter'

Michigan was not playing their best. I agree App. State played better that day but Michigan would still beat them 9 times out of ten. Go Blue!

This one is easy to explain. Michigan underestimated their opponent. Michigan WOULD win a rematch, but the score would still be fairly close. Case closed.
