I didn't think so, until I was listening to him speak today and his use of the English language put me in mind of an old ex-slave. Especially the use of the word "ax" in the place of "ask". He is an educated man, is he not?

He is educated and it truly is sad. I am an American, in Germany if I spoke heavily accented ( like many the southern town I grew up with) I would be without a Job. I speak clear UN-accented English, I have a education and it is reflected in my speech. I can never figure out why someone would dumb himself down to be relative to those around him.

Absolutely not. Rev. Al Sharpton was born October 3, 1954. Slavery ended completely in the US after the Civil War (1861-1865) when the south lost and their slaves were set free. So to answer the question, Al Sharpton wasn't even alive when slavery was legal. In fact Al Sharpton wasn't even born 'till 89 years after slavery ended.

Education can't always overcome dialect. As qwerty pointed out, "ax for ask" is a Southern, not a racial thing.

But Qwerty, overuse of "like" is a slacker thing that transcends race. Chads and Trixies of all races do it equally.

Although I tend to adopt a Texas drawl, I was actually born there, when waxing philosophical, I'm one of those unfortunates with a musical ear who tend to adopt the dialect of whoever I'm talking to after a while.

Thanx for tipping me off, Charburker, so I can block you before you get MY account deleted too.

It's called a southern accent. Whites say "ax" as well. But I'm sure you already knew that.

And what of so many young white people saying "like" between every other word? I'm certain that isn't proper English.

Pound, that's from your experience. Let's not alter the focus here. My main point was just because someone has an accent, that doesn't make them uneducated.

Does your current president, George W Bush remind you of a slave? He's an educated man, is he not?

Al Sharpton is a slave only to his own prejudices.

I like totally like Qwerty's answer it was like really good and stuff.

No but she is right. It is all about where you are raised. There are alot of different accents throughout the country and it doesn't have to do with race.

well exactly how old is he? He might be a desendant of a slave/type person, don't care for that word, everyone should be free/ have been free, but that is just my opinion.
