My brother has been corresponding with an "old girlfriend" who he last knew to be in Illinois. She is apparently now stuck in a Nigerian hospital because she had gone there with her parents & their taxi was in an accident & both of her parents were killed. The hospital will not release her until her bill is paid. According to the embassy this is Nigerian procedure. If it is a scam, she seems to have some of his personal information & knows that he once dated this Sandra Rose David who she claims to be. He seems to be the only one she has been able to contact through the internet & he has spoken with her "doctors". I have heard of similar scams. Does anyone have further info?

I do not have any infos about this or similar scams. Common sense just tells me that a foreigner is the situation (accident in a taxi/stuck in the hospital etc) would get in touch with her embassy which would help to solve the problem. That what Embassies are for.

The whole thing just sounds to suspisous to be true. What about the cab driver's insurance?

Do not fall for any scam and loose your or your brother's money.

Take care

It is true that it is common procedure that a Nigerian hospital will not release a patient until the bill is paid.

That being said, it is also an extremely common (and old) scam that somebody contacts overseas friends/relatives of foreigners living/visiting Nigeria with a bogus but semi-believable story about an accident and hospital bills.

Think about it ... If your brother's old girlfriend really is in a Nigerian hospital, why would she contact your brother and not the US Embassy?

It also sounds a Nigerian scam. Ignore it.

Be careful of Nigeria and Nigerians.
They are con men & women.
