The marker is black and the table is maple wood w/ a honey stain. I don't want to have the table refinished.

try wd-40, in a inconspicuous place to make sure it wont bother the Finnish, if its OK then use it on the marker,

My 3 yr old son wrote on my 8 month old leather sofa with blue AND black Sharpie permanent markers at the same time. I used the 3x Mr Clean Magic Eraser and it faded it until it is ALMOST not noticeable, then I used a leather conditioner on the sofa. You will have to scrub the sofa with the eraser, but it worked better than alcohol, shampoo and soap!!!

you can try goo be gone, or one of those mr clean magic erasers, My daughter wrote on the wall with permanent marker, and it came off with a magic eraser, I haven't tried it on wood! Good luck

Go to where they sell a full line of Formby's products. There should be one for just such a problem.
