I've heard that crime in general is pretty low in Iceland (I might be going to Reykjavik in January), but are the more touristy/populated parts prone to any pickpocketing, drunken behaviour etc? Being from Glasgow, nothing of that nature would particularly bother me but I'm just wondering what to expect? :)

I would say if anything it's even safer than Glasgow. Probably the worst you would experience is excessive noise (and I didn't even notice that in Reykjavik). Plus in January it will be dark for quite a while and cold so it's probably not as likely that you will experience as many partygoers and such. I was there in early June when it barely got dark at all and the weather was nicer so there were more drunk people out.

Reykjavik, and Iceland in general, is gorgeous, although expensive (at least by US standards, not sure how it will be compared to Scotland). It was amazing though, you will love it! Make sure to go to the top of the huge spaceship-looking cathedral there!

Pickpockets are rare in Iceland. Drunken behaviour is a problem in certain places, mainly in the centre of Reykjavík on Friday and Saturday evenings/nights. That happens to be the most touristy area of Reykjavík. During the day and in the evening on weekdays it's absolutely fine, but if you don't like drunken behaviour I recommend staying out of the centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

Since you'll come in January, there might be less drinking than usually while you are here, with everyone still being broke after Christmas. :) So it will probably not be much of an issue.

Enjoy your trip!

I was there (Reykjavik) for 4-5 days back in July of 2005. I was on a trip with about 400 American college kids on a cruise ship. During my time there I never heard anyone have any complaints about any crime whatsoever. Everyone in the city was very very nice and friendly. The only thing I would say is that there are a lot of drunks. I was there at a time when it was light out for ~21 hours of the day and the other 3 hours were twilight so I don't know if there were so many drunks b/c it was light out for so long or if thats normal. We stayed out til about 6am every morning and every time the streets were still flooded with drunks.

Crime is low in Iceland.
There is quite a bit of drunkeness but being from Glasgow you would be used to that ; ).
Seriously though, We went there on a conference and used to go into town at night in large groups, some local girls hung about the single men wanting drinks but they soon get fed up and go when they were told they wern't interested.
We were never even warned about pick pockets when we were given our do's and don't talk, so no problem.
As the other posters I went in June when it was nearly always daylight, we lost track of time and were also still out at 6am.
I don't know if there will be many out drinking in January, it might be too cold.
Reykjavik hasn't really got any touristy areas, it is like a smallish town.
Anyway
Have a nice time.

You really shouldnt worry about crime on Iceland. It rarely happens, and I think Iceland has to be one of the safest places in the world. For more information on Iceland, you could visit:

Have a nice trip, and dont forget to bring lots of money. Thats the only thing about Iceland, its rather expensive over there.
