Yes. It is what regulates the operating temperature of the engine. It allows it to warm up quickly in the winter so we can get heat inside the car more quickly and de-ice the windows. The car can run without one but it is not a good idea.

The answer is no, a thermostat is not absolutely necessary in a car's engine.

If the thermostat is removed, all that will happen is the engine will constantly have fluid circulating through it.

The reason for the thermostat is to optimize engine efficiency. Engines work most efficiently when hot. Actually the hotter the engine, the more efficient it is. (One of the reasons they've been trying to make engines out of cermaic materials). Engine thermostats are there to open and keep the engine as hot as the material of the engine can safely handle, while maintaining optimal performance.

So is the thermostat necessary? not really as the engine will run without it. Why is it there? To increase the efficiency of the engine by maintaining as high a temperature that the material of the engine can handle.

indeed it is
> see the thermostat is a valve that isolates the engine from the radiator
>when the car is warming up it closes to keep whatever volume currently circulating the engine in there until it reaches operating temperature
> once the operating temperature is achieved the valve opens to allow the coolant to circulate through the radiator
> pretty sure these valves are fail open otherwise you would overheat you engine quickly and cause damage

First, i know a lot of people pretend to be geniuses on here, but i'll tell you first off that i'm NOT an expert. BUT, i had a problem with my heat & A/C last summer, and depending on where you live i guess you can drive without one. I live in florida and had problems with my car overheating a lot, and they took the thermostate right out. that was 2 years ago. I would ask a mechanic on this one honey, and not a franchise that will take all your money, but a small private shop where they are honest with you.

Yes a thermostat is necessary. If you didnt have one, or it was not working properly your car would overheat in just a few minutes. The thermostat regulates the tempature of the water/coolant in your car. Many cars also have a water tempature gauge which is useful but is not necessary.

Yes positively. If you had no thermostat you would not have any heat in the winter. The thermostat is what helps the car circulate anti-freeze thru the motor. Your car would over heat or motor would lock with out the circulation of antifreeze.

will most def not overheat without a thermostat , might not heat up to optimum temp as well though

Your engine computer is calibrated exactly for the temperature your thermostat is set to which is approximately 195 degrees.

It wont hurt it but it will run really cold and wont have as much power,i'd replace it asap, also you can put a piece of card board in front of the radiater, only covering half the radiater, then it wont run so cold.

Very much so. It's cheap to fix but if you let it go it can become extremely costly very quickly!!
