Does anyone know what tiles you can and cannot use for a Firepit? My husband is hand building a fire pit in our backyard. What types of tile can go outside and withstand heat and rain?

Pretty much any tile will withstand fire and rain. Tiles are fired at a much higher temperature then an ordinary bon fire can generate. The same is true for glazes. As long as you purchase a high fired tile with a high fired glaze you should be fine.

You might be able to use terra cotta in contact with the heat of a fire, but you would need to season it like a 'chimnea' and cover it to keep it dry. If it gets wet you need to reseason it. I would use fire brick made for the pit and save the tile for decorative exterior surfaces. RScott

I would use a type of brick...tile is too much trouble to have to treat (constantly, it seems) and take care of outdoors....

The tile will crack under the drastic temperature changes.
