It'll depend on where you are. Fortunately I work in NYC so I have a ton of options as far as changing money goes. I tried once to buy Euros at a bank on Long Island and while the rate was good, there was a 3 or 4 day wait period because they didn't have foreign currency on hand. As stated above, Thomas Cooke or American Express Travel centers or the local bank. If you have time before you leave, look around at rates and check commission rates. The bank is usually the best bet. Also, use an ATM card to withdraw cash outside the US if possible and use credit cards. They usually give the most favorable rates and it means you have to carry less cash.
Have a great trip!!

carry some euros with you, by no ability ever substitute on the airport the costs are too extreme. in case you like extra money carry a mastercard so which you would be able to with draw from the atm, in basic terms keep in mind you would be charged a provider cost and likewise you would be paying the fee of substitute for that day. Italy is pricey carry greater beneficial than adequate money with you...stable success.

It is generally best to withdraw money from an ATM once you are in Europe instead of buying Euros (banknotes and coins) at your local bank. It costs money to transport the foreign cash to your place, money which the bank is going to charge you for.

I use either Thomas Cook or my bank; note that you can't just walk into any bank--they each have their own policies and exchange site.

It's best to change your money in your destination company for the best rates.

We got ours at the bank to avoid having to do so at the airport where we wouldn't get as good a rate.
