So now we have Iran which refuses to curtail it's uranium enrichment activities because it claims to need to pursue nuclear energy for it's people. Israel is nervous and threatening to attack Iran. Iran, in turn is threatening to attack Israel. Russia and China are blocking U.N. sanctions against Iran. The U.S. is pursuing a coalition of countries that would impose economic sanctions against Iran without U.N. approval. What a mess. Two word solution: Solar energy. Iran is a dessert. What better place to research, develop and implement solar energy technologies? Such a project would take away any pretense of Iran's need for nuclear power. Of course there would be major global economic adjustments to make in a transition from oil and nuclear power to solar, but wouldn't those be less dangerous than setting the stage for a nuclear World War lll?

Rufus, that's my point. If we (the U.S., the U.N., whoever) can impose economic sactions on Iran, why couldn't we impose solar energy on Iran and remove their argument for nuclear?

Solar energy is a drop in the bucket compared to nuclear power. Simply put, it is not sufficient to power such large things as a country or a town. At best, a quality solar power grid implementation would offset power cost and usage, and the system could take decades to pay itself back (might be worth it though).

Also, advances in solar technology have somewhat stalled. The most efficient methods to gain energy yield from solar power are probably almost final, maybe a new material here or there might increase it, but not by much. There's really little else to research in improving these systems.

I like your idea. Back in the '40s, every farm had wind generators. If every house today was build with wind generators AND solar panels, our need for oil would drop tremendously. There is no reason to import now if everyone would curtail their wastes.
If we do not import from the Middle East (they provide a mere 10% of our oil needs), a lot of pressure would be taken off that region.
If they were to switch to solar (and wind) for energy, they would no longer have an excuse to go nuclear.
Of course, the real reason they want nukes is for WAR!.

Excellent suggestion, however, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria, China, North Korea, Egypt, UAE, Albania, Libya, and a lot more have NO interest in Electrical Power !!! They want the POWER OF CONTROL OVER HUMANS / MANKIND !!!!
There are many places on earth where this technology has been and is planning on future utilization of solar, wind, oceanic wave movements, and geothermic power to generate electrical power.
Unfortunately, most news about these possabilities and opportunities are never allowed to interfere with the "news management/ reporting" since these are not sensationalistic!!!

So shall we glance at the two concepts we've right here - one proceed interior the direction set via the Bush administration. This seems to be your widespread and doubtless rightly so. yet what has been the tip result? Iran remains coming up this is nuclear software, they are not responding to worldwide rigidity and the "shunning" via the Bush Admin has extra greater gasoline to the "great devil" rhetoric that's spewed via the Islamists that run the rustic. they choose a foul guy to deflect interest from their very own failed rules and Bush has unwittingly presented that undesirable guy. So if the U.S. keeps this direction the only thank you to thoroughly stop the Iranians is to the two bomb them into the fifteenth century (impractical at suitable - suicidal at worse) or get China to stop them (seeing because of the fact the U.S. owes China multiple the money it used to attack Iraq unlikely to be triumphant) the two concepts are undesirable and made moot via the invasion of Iraq, which exchange into undertaken for ostensibly the same motives as an Iranian invasion could be. So if what's being completed now's no longer working - why no longer try something new? First Obama has suggested he could wait till the 2009 "elections" to be finished in Iran. possibly then Adminajaidiot would be long previous and a greater amenable man or woman will take his place. Then there will be some circumstances to this talk and there is not any longer something which will acquire to those human beings yet it sluggish. conceivable reward from this state of affairs: The U.S. is now no longer the enormous undesirable guy and the Islamists lose some leverage - with a bit of luck clearing the way for the enormous reasonable community to take their place. maximum of Iran is youthful and arranged for exchange. There additionally could be some allowances for the Iranians to advance nuclear skill to grant their human beings an option skill source becuase as quickly as their oil runs obtainable will be some very indignant, nicely experienced terrorists working around the entire of the middle east. those talks can provide the possibility for the U.S. to grant some incentives to Iran in substitute for concessions. All good consequences and well worth exploring. finally in case you go with to look on the stunning achievement that worldwide shunning brings - look at Cuba. Generations of presidents have refused to work together in any open activities with a united states that's not greater accountable than China in abusing this is human beings. look on the result - a Castro remains in skill and Cuba isn't unfastened.

Actually,

Most of Iran is mountains. But lets say that it is a desert. If you covered the entire surface area of Iran with Solar Panels, those panels would produce less than 1/2 the energy a nuke power plant would.

Iran would like nothing better for us to leave Iraq right now. They are wringing their hands with the possibility of troop withdrawl, because they know that the current Iraqi Government is in no position to put up a defense.

Now with that in mind and the current state of affairs with their nuclear enrichment and political desire to eradicate Israel, would allow the Iranians to negotiate a deal with Iraq to place 'nuclear interests' closer to Israel. It would be safe to say that these interests would not provide electrical light, but firelight.

Right now, I would consider Iran one of two countries that would use nukes openly. They don't want to use sunlight, they want to create it!

We need to stay put for more than one reason. Right now it is the lesser of two evils...like it or not.

"Solar power" isn't a plan. What do you propose we or they actually "do" with solar power? That is, what is your actual plan?

Solar power, as an answer to Iran's energy needs would not be acceptable to Iran, because secretly they want nuclear weapons.

And ultimately, Iran wants to greatly expand it's power in the region and to get rid of Israel. How is solar power going to do that for them?

Only one problem, Iran is going for Nuclear Weapons, not Nuclear Power.
I don't believe Iran will accept our implementing solar power research in their territory. This isn't about energy, it is about socio-political power.

Iran wants weapons, not energy. Since you are a thinker think about this...How many Nukes would it take to wipe out a very very very tiny Israel? Not many. Sure they kill a few Muslims, but a victory such as that would certainly be overlooked that some gave their lifes to finally destroy their enemy.

Tell that to the Radical Islamist government of Iran !!

I think it's a great idea , but the conservative reality in me tells me that there's no way that Iran will accept that . Why ? -- Because their intentions are nuclear weaponry and ya can't make nukes out of solar panels .
