I'm so sick about my car right now I feel like I'm going to puke. Everything was perfect with it then all of a sudden on my way home today everything just went to hell. First, I had to floor it so I could merge into 55 mph traffic and when I did the engine just revs like crazy but it wouldnt shift. I almost got into an accident. It still shifts when I just drive it normally. is the tranny cooked? Then just to make matters wose my ABS and Trac off lights came on as I was pulling into my driveway (somebody had mentioned ball joints as a possible cause a while ago???), and the icing on the cake was when I went to shift it into park the shifter knob popped off. What the F*ck is going on???!!!

hangtrojanover it may seem funny to you but i was in the middle of a 6 lane road with a 60 mph speed limit and my car wouldn't shift and go any faster than 30 mph. It scared the crap out of me and thats why I sounded so hysterical when I wrote this. Also I can't check my tranny fluid because it is a sealed transmission with no dipstick.

Well if anybody cares, I got it back from the dealer today and they said that the tranny was almost 2 quarts low on fluid!! I don't do my own maintenance so either I have a leak or somebody messed up when they flushed my transmission back in March. They also reset the computer and the full throttle shifts are somewhat better now. As for the abs lights they suspect a wheel speed sensor as the culprit.

hello cc,first of all, when a trany does not shift at freeway speeds, and shifts fine under "normal driving conditions"it's posible the passing gear is not engaging.need to have trany checked.as for the abs &tracc off lite coming on,if the abs &tracc lights stay on, you need to have a diagnostic check performed to rule out sensor problems.by the way, who ever told you 2002 grand am has ball joints, this person needs to know your car has mc pherson struts which eliminates the use of ball joint suspentions. good luck

Sorry, but this one makes me laugh just because of the way you asked the question. To answer you might help. The shifter knob is held on by a C-clip so either it broke, the shifter broke or the knob broke. The other deal needs to be checked as you cannot say a trans. is cooked just by what you state. The first thing to do is take the dipstick out the the trans and check the fluid. It should be blood red and fairly clean. If it is black and stinks burnt, you are probably right in saying the trans is cooked. I would also check the ABS and the PCM modules for codes as this might be indicating that you just lost a speed sensor in the trans which might be causing all of you problems except the knob deal. Don't panic yet, check some things before going ballistic!

Shifter knob came off cause your pissed :) and probably got a touch aggressive with the shifter.
Your other issues are likely all due to a bad wheel speed sensor. If the car computer does not know what speed it is moving at then it won't know when to shift! Same thing for ABS and TRAC light. How can ABS or traction control work if no speed signal.
Any competent shop should be able to diagnose and repair this for less than $350.00

Relax....first things first. The reason the engine revved and the transmission didn't shift is a problem with a seal or the valvebody itself. You may be able to get some help from Pontiac if you call them up and talk to the customer cares center. They may ask you to get a diagnosis from your local dealer. As for the ABS light you just may have a problem with one of the sensors. NO Biggy. The shifter knob popped off because the clip on the outside probably worked itself loose

Hi! First off....slow deep breaths! LOL! I don't think your problem will be too serious. Sounds to me like you may have either a plugged fuel filter (should be changed at least every 30k miles) or possibly a plugged cat. converter. If it's the cat. converter it could still be under factory warranty, I believe it's 8/80 on that. Both are easy to check by most shops if you are not a do it yourselfer. Should be less that about an hour and a half to check out both. You didn't mention if your check engine light was on, if it is that could be why your abs and trac off lights are on. Depending on what code sets it is possible that the ecm code could cause the abs to "turn off".
Don't be too discouraged, Grand Am's are nice cars and if maintained well just seem to keep on going and going!
Hope this helps, good luck to you!

I have the same problem with my warning lights. The check engine, ABS, and Trac off are all on. They don't come on until 15 minutes down the road. Is it possible there is nothing wrong and it is just a computer fluke?

that is extra beneficial than probably an argument with the trans. gm had themes with the thm 4t60, verify back with the broking for a available remember. the fan administration concern is extra beneficial than probably the resistor trio.
