Honestly, hubby and I both just can't stand clutter or dirty kitchen areas or bathrooms either so our house is always presentable to last minute company because this is just how we live all the time.
And each day we swish the toilets and make sure clean cloths are around the sinks in the bathrooms. (You can't tell we both grew up in the military huh :O)))
If you do just a little here and there in the house, you don't have to ever worry about the mad dash to clean up for unexpected visits.

I didn't know until a few years ago how much stuff you can hide under a bed when someone calls and says they'll be over in 10 min's. The oven? Another of my favorites.
Fortunately, since it's just me now, I try to keep things tidied up, bed made etc. But there are 'those' times.

I gave up on this one years ago...if someone drops in unexpectedly, they deserve what they get! Instead of housecleaning, I spend my time making lists of what I hate to do....wash dishes, cook, dust, wash windows, clean floors, wash clothes, dry clothes, hang up clothes, make beds, change beds, clean the patio, clean up after the dogs, feed the dogs, water the dogs. ... I guess I am not very domesticated, am I ? I make a list of what I like to do...and the first line is "Hire a housekeeper." So, I have maid service every other day...Look at it this way...I keep the economy rolling, and that is a very good thing.
(although I hate doing it, I DO feed my dogs, I DO give them water, I DO comb the flea bags out, but I hate doing it... )
I make company plans around the days that the house is cleaned....easy!

I had a neighbor like that! She through all sorts of stuff in closets and even in the oven. Unfortuantely, she was preheating the oven and forgot to remove the stuff that was inside and started a fire.
I have another friend who was moving. She took all the clothes from the drawers and put them in trash bags thinking it would be easier to just empty the bags back into the drawers. Unfortunately her husband thought it was trash and threw everything out and it was trash day!

LOL! Boy can I relate...
I've been known to stuff dishes in the oven (if the dishwashers full and I haven't had time to put the clean away and the other dirty dishes in the machine)....
I use Clorox wipes to quickly wipe down sinks, toilets, whatever...
I make my bed EVERY morning...without fail (thanks, Mom!) so at least my bedroom looks nice...I tend to tidy up as I go...as we have a lot of "drop-in" company!
Thanks for the laugh! And knowing I'm not "alone"!!!!!

I have created a plan to deal with surprise visits like you described. If the house is a mess, I usually steer them to the most organized room and prevent them from roaming where they can see the other messy rooms.
Serving good eats and conversation also helps.

I have a super duper house keeper who is very creative. Bless her heart! She does have patients, right after she vacums, she gives my sweetie a doggie treat, knowing she will get crumbs all over the just vacumed carpet, then she says I'll be d-----if Iam going to vacum that carpet again until tomorrow, I'm not being paid to clean up after this dog.

our house is clean enough to live in and cluttered with things we use or read daily , If folks don't like it well then I guess it wasn't me they came to see. It's a home, not a show place, I'm not out to impress anybody but the family.
