In a long terza rima poem you can almost see quatrains.

a-b-a-b-c-b-...

You can already see a-b-a-b, even though the second b goes with the b-c-b

It's all in how you look at it. You'll see b-c-b-c as well. The "quatrains" will overlap each other because it's really a tercet structure. You can't read the quatrains separately. It's like a cascading effect.

The effect is the delay of the rhyme, the softening of the rhyme as it blends into the next rhyme. If you really look at the form, you'll notice that if you remove the first line's final word the poem's form would be bab cbc dcd ede or ede...and then another e. Adding the first "a" back in, you really have a bab cbc dcd ede e...but that's not the way the stanza's are broken up, and by making it aba bcb cdc ded e or ee, you soften the rhyme and carry over the rhyme into the center of the next stanza...the same as if you'd omitted the first rhyme word! This symetry indicates that there are actually two simultaneous threads that move through the poem...it's subtle, but that's where the form derives its power. The couplet (ee) at the end gives closure to an otherwise open form that could go on forever, but it is not a requirement and some poems use a single line to finish the poem.
