god is almighty, this is a truth, if it's not true then god does not exist at all , don't u agree? the question is: if god is almighty, can he create a great rock that he can not lift ?

if the answer is yes then he's not almighty coz simply he can't lift it.
if no then he's not almighty.

that's why i don't believe in god:if he really exists, i think he lies. if he doesn't, that's cool coz i don't wanna go to hell just because i don't believe in him.

Omnipotence is not understood as meaning as God can do whatever he wants, but is instead a reference to God's self-sufficiency, meaning, that God needs no other being or reality to be who God is. In other words, God's existence is not predicated or conditioned by any other reality. This is the distinction between the divine nature and a finite, human nature. This circumscription disturbs those who have a voluntarist conception of God, those who have simply correlated omnipotence to a sense that God can do whatever God wants, and in the process, God's nature is severed from his will and God becomes capricious and untrustworthy. Further, the voluntarist conception of God leads to the the problem that you describe.

You might profit from reading Anselm (his Monologion and Prosologion) on the question you raise. Anselm anticipated the problem of theological voluntarism centuries before its greatest proponents, Duns Scotus and William of Occam (google these names and the concept of theological voluntarism). Anselm identifies God as that which nothing greater can be thought, and as such, there is no reality, that is greater than God. Further, he demonstrates in very elegant terms the distinction between the idea of God and something akin to your rock, which is merely a product of one's imagination.

No one can coerce you to belief in God, however, your objection to God's existence has already been answered. If you pursue your atheism with intellectual rigor, perhaps you can answer Anselm's objection to your question and answer.

Sorry I don't agree with you. God can do all things. what makes you think he can't lift a rock ? If he choose to do so he would. He is God. He serves those who believe in him. A rock is so unimportant. There are so many people praying to him for healing and to solve greater problems, than lifting a rock..... Have you ever read the Bible you should you might learn some thing about how Great and Almighty he is.
I know I am going to heaven when I die his Son died on the cross for my sins I know this is true . You need to go to church and read the bible before you judge God.

First of all, God is real.
God can create anything, threw Him all things are possible.
If God was to create a great rock, He could lift it with one finger (so to speak.) Still don't believe me? Ask yourself this.....
How could God create something, he couldn't even carry????
He really does exists.....
He created you and me......
You won't necessarily go to hell if you do not believe in God, as long as you live the right way.
but as humans we have a natural need to have a religious hunger.
this means we need religion.
we need to believe that after we die, there is more to life.
Just remember, God's ways r not our ways.
so if something doesn't go ur way, this doesn't mean God doesn't love you.
He has a plan 4 every one of us.
Jesus His only Son, gave His life 4 our sins, so we won't suffer hell if we live good lives.
Jesus once said to His apostles, "A Shepperd has 100 sheep, one had went missing. He took off and spent days and nights looking 4 the 1 lost sheep, even though he still had 99. When He finally finds the missing sheep He welcomes his back in loving arms."
God is the Shepperd, and we are the sheep.
God will never forget about us, or abandon us.
He loves us so much, He sacrificed His only son, who is seated at the Right Hand of the Father, in heaven, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, angles, saints, and other past souls.
Please try to begin your religion in God.
You will have more answers in life.
Feel much safer, and will be comforted in hard times.
i wish u good luck, and i'll pray 4 u!

I really dont know who god is, or what his responsibilities are, and what he does for in his play time (like making rocks that he cannot lift!!!!!) or wht his hobbies are....but I do believe a 100% of a ''higher power'', someone, or something that really works, a mechanism through which we function. I will not believe that the brain works on its own, and the heart beats on its own, and that we just dropped from the skies.....or aliens carried us over....but whatever it is, whoever the ''higher power'' is has made something called the ''soul'', which definitely is something humans have not explored into. Humans went on to make robots, computers, machines, bla bla bla...what have u not, but they are yet to understand what the ''soul'' is. Your body dies, and goes down, rots, and no one every remembers you again, but what really got you working, nobody knows right ??? More than lifting stupid stones (superman ? spider man?) ..please...iam sure whatever ''it'' ''him'' or ''her'' is, is doing some job....we have messed ourselves.....I really am confused if we shud blame whoever or whatever made us today...

But yes, I do agree with someone who said here that bible is exaggerated...and all the religious books are, bible, quran, gita, anything....because these have been handed over to us through generations after generations, who willed to write, or add in, or cut out what they felt like...So if these books have told u that he creates rocks bigger than him (unless we know wht his or hers or its size is...) i donno...what kind ofbooks u are reading thru...

However, there is a ''Higher Power''....

Good luck...

Come on, now! Clearly you want to believe or you wouldn't be writing this. As some of the others tried to say, you are limited but God is not. And, you are trying to limit God by the lack of your own imagination and faith.

It's easiest to think of yourself as a child and God is your parent and your understanding of anything and everything that happens is limited to a child's understanding. Just like a child would do, you can try to understand your parent's world but it is really impossible.

If you are interested in trying to come closer to the truth, you may want to join a Bible study group. It's silly to even try to understand the Bible by yourself. You'll be like the Ethiopian Eunuch (see the book of Acts).

Keep thinking. Keep praying. Keep loving.

All existence rests in God, there is no logical sense to questions of the sort you are asking..only demonstration of any true ideas as to what God might be...so really God is not a spook creeping around in 'heaven"; there is no place where God is not, nothing that exists outside of Him for there is no such thing as "outside of" God, only our ignorance:)

he exists and he can create a mighty rock that he can't create. He just build a machine that can. Plus God can do anything you are just using logic that doesnt make sence. I mean think about it this way we human create things that can always be undone some how right? because God is all powerfull than it only makes sence that there isnt one kind of being more powerful than him

god is almighty. if he builds a rock, he can lift it. but god can build a rock and build such a rock that he cant lift....so god desired it if he wanted he could have made the rock such that he could have lifted it. so in any case he will remain almighty.

Let's see, you are saying that if God places limits on Himself or He is not God. And in reverse if He doesn't place limits on Himself he is not God?

Sir, that is circular logic.

God created the entire phyical universe, I don't think he sits around playing with rocks on a hill.

You are trying to put human limitations on God. It is not possible to comprehend his power, he can't be summed up by human limits. For instance, he created life. A question posed with human limitations would be, "Who created him if he created life?" He has always been and always will be, so there is no answer that would satisfy that question unless you take out the human limited thinking.
