5x-1+(2x-3)(3x+1)
First remove the parentheses by multiplying, getting:
5x-1 +6x^2 +2x -9x -3
Now collect all like terms, getting:
6x^2 -2x -4

Is this what your looking for?

5x -1 + (2x-3)(3x+1)
5x -1 + 6x^2 - 7x - 3
*Rearranging*
5x - 7x + 6x^2 - 3 - 1
-2x + 6x^2 - 4

To multiple you multiply each possible term combination and add.

5x-1+ 2x*3x + 2x*1 - 3*3x -3*1
5x-1+6x^2+2x-9x-3
etc
