I was wondering if any of you ladies has ever experienced extreme thirst in your early pregnancy. I will be 6 weeks along tom, and I am thirsty all of the time. I know that people say things like that can be a sign of what your body needs, but I drink about 3-4 water bottles and then another 1-2 glasses of water plus alot of juice a day. I know that I do not need more, and I know that there is no harm in me drinking alot, but I was just wondering if anyone else has ever felt this extreme thirst in early pregnancy.

A lot of women do. When you metabolize calories your body has to burn water to regulate its temperature, or else you would burn from fever. You burn sooo much calories in early pregnancy beacuse the embryo is having such a huge growth spurt. Its soooo normal to be sooo thirsty.

dont count how much you're drinking, just drink what you want when you want.

Make sure you're taking a prenatal, and maybe have you iron checked. In some cases extreme thirst, or the craving for ice is a sign of low iron. Thats also common in pregnancy.

Excessive Thirst During Pregnancy

Increased thirst is very common in early pregnancy, as is an increase in saliva production. Your body does need extra fluids at this point because your blood volume is increasing dramatically to provide for the baby's needs as well as your own.

If you typically aim for 8, 8 oz glasses of water or non-caffeinated beverages a day you probably want to increase your intake to 10 or 12 glasses of water or non-caffeinated fluids. Remember also that salt will make you feel thirstier, and many people early in pregnancy crave salt. Avoid caffeinated or overly-sugared beverages and increase the amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables you're eating if you aren't having too much morning sickness to manage that, and it may help.

Your doctor should be testing you for diabetes, it is a routine test during pregnancy, maybe you could ask her/him to test you sooner. Extreme thirst could be a sign of diabetes.
It could also be a very normal thing for you, your body does need a lot more while you are pregnant.
Just mention your concern at your next appointment , your doc will be able to explain things so much better than some of us!

Same thing happened to me. I didn't know I was pregnant. I couldn't drink enough water. As a matter of fact I took a home pregnancy test and it came out negative. I actually thought I was going threw menopause. I went to see my doc and he ran a battery of tests to include a diabetes test. He did not check to see if I was pregnant because I assured him, based on my home pregnancy test, that I wasn't. Well when everything came out negative I was baffled and a bit disheartened. I thought I was going crazy. Anyway, a few weeks later I took another pregnancy test. This one came back positive. I immediately called my doc to assure him that I wasn't crazy or a hypochondriac.

I don't remember when my thirst kind of equalized but it did and now I have to force myself to drink the 8 glasses a day.

As mentioned above, you should probably get yourself checked to rule out diabetes.

Take care, be safe, and congrats on your pregnancy.

Mention it to your doctor, he or she may want you to do a gestational diabetes test. But most likely it is just because your body needs a lot of extra water now. Your blood volume increases by 1/3 when you are pregnant, and that takes water. Also, your respiration becomes a lot more efficient, you breathe in and out more, and more deeply, and every exhalation takes moisture out of your body. I am sure it's nothing to worry about...but mention it, just to be sure, and keep drinking water! :-)

Also, I don't know if you are having any morning sickness, but obviously vomiting takes a lot of moisture out of your body. But definitely you are probably peeing more right now because of the pregnancy hormone's effect on your bladder, so you are craving water to replace that lost fluid too. All kinds of reasons to crave water during pregnancy. I drank it by the pitcherful, not the glassful...lol

Extreme thirst is a symptom of diabetes.

You may want to mention it to your OBGYN just to be safe.

I can't recall if I was super thirsty or not that early on...but I was later and I did end up with GD...

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/XsGc0
As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.
