Sometimes I look their way & even though I know they won't smile, I offer mine. Or sometimes I look away b/c I feel bad seeing someone on the streets and can't help but wonder, "what happened?" There have been times when I've also been led to give some money, just depends.

Fortunately I live in a super small town where I am not around homeless people so I don't have to be sad all the time. We used to live in a spot where we would see them and we would always give money if we had extra. I know that people say that they are just gonna use it to buy booze or drugs but I am an optimist and hope otherwise. Since I do not gamble on anything else I figure that I am allowed to take that kinda small risk and as long as I know I shouldn't care what they used it for. After all, it is a gift to them to use how they see fit.

Having said all that, they still make me cry for them and their situation, and make me feel lucky that it is not me.

I always wish I had a briefcase with thousands of dollars to hand them....but I don't. I think the best thing is to be prepared to give when you can and when it's reasonable. When you go outside, understand that you may meet homeless people, and be prepared with something to give. That way you don't impulsively give too much. If you've given to 2-3 people already, use your head along with your heart. Don't be afraid to pass up a homeless person knowing you've already done your part.

Many years ago I helped a Priest to start a soup kitchen in my city. We fed the homeless. At first there weren't many coming, and it was only my parish. Now it is three days a week, non-denominational, and MANY are being fed. After all, they are people, and shouldn't be judged based on appearance or circumstance.

Have him tell me a joke or do a dance. If I'm going to give him some money, at least entertain me in the process.

I live in a fairly small town ... and there's a lot of them, for the size of the the town. I ignore them .. if they ask for money, I'll offer to buy them a burger or somethin', but, I will not give them money.
