This was inspired by a question I answered, asking women how we react when a guy honks at us. On getting Best, and reading the other answers, it hit me: the real question is why guys do this.

What do you expect to happen when you honk at a woman?

What's your purpose?

If you aren't a guy who does this, have you ever asked guys who do this why they do it? If so, what did they say?

Enquiring minds want to know....

I didn't ask in a huffy way or make any derogatory comment about it, I was just curious.

It has always seemed peculiar to me. I suppose because I assumed they did it because they expect us to rip our clothes off and jump into their arms ready to rumble, which seem pretty unlikely.

I have the feeling not all answers are serious.

;-)

The most offensive answer was given by a woman, interestingly enough.

I'm referring to Ms. "I LOVE and any female who says she doesn't is either lying or has never been honked at."

The Guidelines for using this site forbid me from telling you what I think of you, but, no. Not every female who doesn't feel the same way you do about a given male reaction is lying.

Were you capable of reading, you might have seen that it creeps out many women, for instance.

Hardly anyone actually answered the question.

"Because" is NOT an answer or explanation. It adds nothing to my understanding of the phenomenon.

Nor are the answers from women who haven't actually asked men, or reasoned from their perspective (the "because they're pigs" sorts of answers).

And now, to choose a Best, [drumroll]....

This is so funny! I love these battle of the sexes... But anyway, I don't understand why someone would be offended by being honked at. I'm a guy, so I've never really experienced this "dreadful" honk. But I try to imagine myself in the position where I'm walking and a woman honks at me. This would make me say "Wow, I must be looking pretty good today!" Boosting my self esteem.
I think of it as a way of someone giving a quick compliment. Nothing offensive.

each each now and then people are merely being friendly while they honk. I stay in an area the place people many times honk in the event that they pass you, in spite of if or no longer they comprehend you or no longer. it is not any longer continuously (or perhaps many times) a flirt ingredient. Sorry to assert this, yet you're being slightly dramatic. it is not any longer a large deal, basically a delightful gesture.

I find the act disgusting.

I'm haven't been able to obtain my restricted permit yet, I am only sixteen, and so I don't have any means of getting places besides walking or riding my bike.

Walmart is pretty close to my house, but to get to it you have to walk down the side of the busy road for a little under a mile. I'm just minding my own business and then some guy will honk their horn or yell something completely inappropriate at me.

I'm sixteen for chrissake. These men say it makes us feel good to get the "compliment"? Oh, yes, I want some loser who honks at girls ten years younger than them that have no class whatsoever admiring me. No. Only self-conscious women would enjoy getting a compliment in whatever form they can. And I'm not self-conscious.

Some men I just can't stand. Not that all men are like this, but the only men I wouldn't mind getting a compliment from is anyone who has the decency to make polite conversation before asking me out in a classy manner.

And yes, I do prefer older men, but I prefer men who are well-mannered and don't act like twelve year olds with a driver's liscence.

Lol I think guys that honk at us women are hillarious. It's more embaressing to themselves than the woman, in my opinion. Too scared to actually talk to someone one on one, but will just honk and yell or whatnot.

It's completely stupid.....I'm walking in the parking lot into my job and someone on the street driving by honks at me......I mean really what is the point? Or sometimes they yell? Just dumb.

I think they expect the woman to jump in take a ride to the Shangri-la the guy should know where is at.
But usually all he knows is the road to the Motels strip.
On recap, maybe all he has intended(confused) is the way back to the Hookers'mile drive-ins.Their only experience with women,on w/heels

It's their way of being playful usually, just lettin you know you look cute or like sayin 'hi.' Just take it as a compliment... ignore, smile, wave or whatever you feel like the situation calls for.

Here's my theory:

Men are simple.

They obviously think that if they honk at us, we'll either:
a) flash them
b) rip off all of our clothes in joy
or c) make them stop the car so we can immediately have sex with them.

Ad even better question !!!

Has it ever worked?! Can you imagine?! 40 years from now, telling your grandchildren how you met?!!! LMAO!
"well honey, your father honked his horn at me, and I knew right at that moment that he was completely original, and a romantic at heart. it was love at first honk!"

AND- To Johnny Dope(below me) IF a guy got stopped his car, got out, AND walked over to me just to talk to me and let me know he thought I was hot, well that's a keeper! any guy who actually PUTS IN ANY KIND OF EFFORT (*ahem*) is worth at least talking to!

When I honk at a woman I want it to be blatently clear that I'm objectifying her, and that I'm imagining her naked. If she ignores me & I don't get my point across initially, then I'll yell out the window, "Hey look at me when I'm objectifying you! You're a piece of meat baby, Whooo!!!" Then I drive away. It's totally worth it, and no matter what anyone says I'll keep doing it. I am a classic chovanistic man, and that's the way I likes it.
What do you expect? If a guy stopped while he was driving, got out of the car, and walked over to talk to you, he still wouldn't get the time of day. Men do the whole objectification routine, because it's foolproof. You can tell a woman that you think she's attractive without being rejected. It's the only freedom we have, and now women make it out to be the wost thing possible for a man to do besides peeing in public. If woman objectified me like that I'd be feeling great about myself all day long. Get over it, he ain't hurting anyone.

to NikkiLee (Above me): YEAH RIGHT!! You just say that to be romantic and condescending. If a guy driving stopped his car and got out to mack you. He might as well be filming a porno in your mind, cause he'll still get treated as some kinda weirdo obsessive freak. I know because my loser a** has actually tried that quite a few times, and got rejected every time. :-( That's why I stick to my objectification in appropriate settings. I wouldn't jock on the Queen or anything.. I have tact. Very little, but still there's some.
